Hey everyone! My name is Thea Newton and I am a twenty four year old Australian Brit who was born in Singapore! I still get asked where I feel like I am from…do I feel British? Australian? Singaporean? For a long time I had no idea the answer to this question, but after a lot of thought, I have decided I am Woodfordian! Woodford Folk Festival is the place I have felt most at home over my life and it definitely sparked my love for music, and festivals and was the catalyst for my attempt to attend 52 festivals in 52 weeks!
I was lucky enough to grow up in one of the most multicultural cities in the world, to parents who had the travel bug from a young age! A combination of listening to their stories and being exposed to so many wonderful nationalities and countries from a young age has definitely had a large impact on my life! After graduating high school in Brisbane, I put my backpack on for the first time and travelled around the UK, Europe, Singapore and Malaysia! Since then I have lived in the USA for a year, working at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, worked at The Disney Store in London for six months and backpacked Europe for another six months! The people I have met along the way continually inspire me and I definitely feel like I have a strong case of the travel bug!
After my gap year, and in between other adventures, I have studied Tourism and Event management at the University of Queensland! Whilst I did enjoy studying, I decided it was time to stop sitting in a classroom and start learning on the go! I had the idea to try and attend a festival a weekend for a year nearly two years ago and I spent a long time telling myself that it was an insane idea that I could never be able to pull off! After a lot of encouragement from my family and friends, and after a year of saving and planning, I have set off! 52 festivals in 52 weeks? It may not be possible, but I am certainly going to give it a good go!
Whilst the year will be more fun than I can imagine, I will also be using this time to learn and share as much as I can about festivals! From the logistics of festivals, to how to go about getting volunteering places at festivals, how to get from festival to festival, how to festival on a budget…the list is endless, and I hope to inspire people to support live music, to visit festivals and also to travel!
I am so excited to document everything this year will bring (from the weird, to the wacky, to the downright wonderful) and I hope you will come on this journey with me!
